COLLIN FOX

GRAPHIC DESIGNER

This project was assigned to me in my Advanced Type class and I really wanted to focus on the topic of self-esteem, and the toxicity that occurs on social media. This might be one of the more emotional pieces I’ve done, since I’ve experienced this firsthand. I included various harsh, negative words, along with positive ones. I wanted to make it seem extremely chaotic, almost like you’re being bombarded with everything all at once, similar to an average social media experience. My process began with picking out words or phrases I frequently saw on these platforms, and mashed them altogether. I enjoy the contrasting fonts, different sizes, thicknesses, and how the black and white look against the Instagram logo. I think it is balanced in terms of placement, and looks appealing.

In Packaging, I created a set of chip bags varying in colors and design styles. I had a lot of fun creating a more modern bag, and a fun pink package, too.

In my Packaging class, we had to recreate the Dots candy package into something new and fresh. I started off by taking inspiration from higher-end package elements, and wanted to include that into my recreation. I did not want this to look like something you would purchase at a gas station. I love using different materials for projects, such as shiny gold foil, fun patterned paper, and bright ribbons, which can add so much to the final product. I went through multiple stages until I came up with this polka-dotted, triangular box with a bright pink interior. I think it looks very whimsical, child-like, but not to the point where an adult would be thrown off if they would receive this as a gift. I could definitely see this at an airport or an expensive dessert shop, and think it looks much better than the original Dots box.

In Advertising, we created a poster for the famous opera, Carmen. I created an abstract figure of a bull that is present in the play, while adding red and black, which is symbolic too. We were supposed to go see the opera in person, but COVID messed that up!

In my Typography class, we made a magazine about Spain and everything it has to offer. I talked about fashion, art, food, and nature. I went with a minimalist approach, and chose images that matched the color of my magazine.

In my Design Studio 2 class, we had to create a shopping bag for an imaginary jewelry store. I had to follow the guidelines that were given, such as not being too short or tall. I really wanted to give off the vibe of luxury, high-end, and something that would make a statement. I think by using diamonds, pearls, and including LED lights inside the bag, it really did the job. I think it’s gorgeous, and my process for this assignment was taking inspiration from designer handbags themselves, instead of the shopping bag a designer handbag would come in. I want people to display this shopping bag alongside their other luxury goods. I also really wanted this to look like the stars in Rolls-Royce car, the epitome of wealth. The process of handcrafting, folding the stiff paper, and gluing each singular gemstone to the bag was tedious, but I think I succeeded in creating something extremely elegant.

I am Collin Fox. I love fashion, architecture, food, animals, and the world. As a designer, I want to show beauty and minimality with a few touches of cultural flair. I’ve always been drawn to posters, packaging, and designs produced in other countries that are not typically seen here in the U.S. My goal is to have an impact on those around me and have some fun along the way. I want to leave people remembering who I am. My style is minimal and clean, utilizes pops of color and can be described as amusing. My work is my own because I have a very haphazard personality in real life, and that sometimes comes out in my art. I am extremely inspired by Takashi Murakami, and fashion houses like Dior and Bottega Veneta. Reviewing fashion shows are extremely helpful for me, they essentially tell me what is in and upcoming in fashion, which directly correlates to design for things like advertisements in magazines or online. I’ve always been interested in fashion design, and drawing has always been one of my favorite pastimes since I was a child. I think creativity is in all aspects of my life, I like to do things outside of the box, which sets me apart. My people skills help me tremendously, allowing me to really connect with clients, and I am never afraid to try anything new. My approach to life is honestly to have fun and enjoy whatever I’m doing at that moment. I do not want to live waiting for the next phase of my life to happen, when I’m in the one I yearned for right now. I try to look at things with a positive mindset, you cannot be bitter and expect your life to be sweet. Design is an action to me for sure. I aspire to move to a different country as soon as possible, and begin creating lifelong experiences on my own.
